Students from all over the district presented their artwork at the annual K-12 Fine Arts Festival held at Ewell elementary this year. I was very proud to hand pick several amazing artists from Switzer to represent our school. It was great to see students and families supporting the arts on opening night and other times throughout the week. Here are some photos of Switzer students next to their creations.

The fifth graders had an awesome time using paper mache to cover a pizza box. After the paper mache dried, we were able to draw and paint directly on the cover of the box. It made a nice surface just like a professional artist's canvas. Our subject matter was enlarged flowers, after we learned about the famous american artist, Georgia O'Keefe. Students were able to blend colors to make tints and shades to paint inside their flower and make it look realistic. A very special thank you goes out to Jimmy at Little Ceasar's Pizza located right across from Switzer. He kindly donated all of the pizza boxes for the fifth graders to use and even included a coupon for free crazy bread for each student if they finished their painting. What an incentive! Six students were chosen to have their painting displayed in the District Art Show and they received a coupon for a free pizza! Visit Jimmy at Little Ceasar's for some yummy pizza and tell him thanks for supporting the arts at Switzer Elementary! It is located at: 53101 Shelby Rd. After viewing a powerpoint on the ancient art of quilling, which is rolling paper, the fifth graders created these interesting quilled snowflakes. They rolled strips of paper in a variety of shapes and then glued down the coils to create a symmetrical snowflake.
The fifth graders were introduced to the art of photography when they created these color wheel photos. We chose 12 objects to take a photo of and then we hand colored our photo with colored pencils to make an interesting color wheel showing primary, secondary, and intermediate colors.
Wow! One of my students created these two beautiful works of art at home on her own time. She surprised me one day with the artwork and I was so happy to hang them in my classroom. Both pieces are created on canvas. The long vertical artwork reminds me of Henri Matisse's cut paper masterpieces. The second artwork is a great example of texture. I love sharing these with all of my students and I am honored that a student took the time to create something so beautiful for me. How inspiring! Fifth graders started off the year creating a relief design using lots of different types of lines. First we drew out a line design on poster board. Next we glued yarn down to the line design to give our drawing a three dimensional look to it. After that, we covered the whole drawing with a piece of foil, pressed down the foil, and colored the indents with sharpie markers. Each students' creation turned out to be a beautiful work of art.
